Selected Question: How do I train up leaders in the Cell Church? |
Answer: Answered by Little Falls Christian Centre
The most important principle in training leaders is that most is caught and not taught. In other words - the most effective method of training is going to take place by the leaders experiencing things hands on for themselves. The most vital aspects of Cell life are going to be received by submitting to a mentorship process. Each leader needs to be part of a healthy Cell.
Obviously, this question refers more to the formalised process of equipping. In a nutshell the process in theory looks as follows. In a simple format, equipping in a Cell Church should address the following skill needs.
| Level One | Cell Leader Training | | Level Two | Zone Supervisor Training | | Level Three | Zone Pastor Training | | Level Four | District Pastor | | Level Five | Senior Pastor |
You might argue that this only applies to the Jethro system of operating Cells. It applies to all systems, if you are G12 then swop the word level for the word generation. I.e. Level three refers to leaders that have 3rd generation G12 Cells underneath them. etc.
Now let us look at equipping of the first level, the training of Cell Leaders. It does not matter which model you adapt, whether it be the Touch training track, or Bethanys baseball diamond, or Cesar Castellanos Encuentro method, each of these contain the basic foundation which are namely 4 main steps.
The first step is to teach the person the Basic Doctrines or Principles of the Kingdom. The second step is to equip the person to walk in spiritual victory and to deal with problem areas in their lives. The third step is to equip and mobilise the potential leaders to reach out to the lost and equip them with practical friendship evangelism skills. The fourth step is to impart basis leadership skills and equip the leader to operate life changing Cell meetings as well as actively model Cell life to the next generation of leaders.
If you would like more detail, then let us look at the topics that are covered in our Equipping Track at Little Falls Christian Centre. - Our system works on the principle of a person receiving a Process booklet that they have to read and work through.
- There are questions at the end of each section of the book that the person has to fill in.
- After completing the Process booklet the person takes his process booklet to his Cell Leader who checks the answers and answers any questions. The Cell leader then signs the booklet at the back.
- The signed booklet is entrance to an encounter weekend.
- There is a process Booklet and an Encounter weekend for each of the four stages.
- We call each stage and Encounter for example Encounter 1, Encounter 2 etc.
- The Weekend Encounters comprise a Friday night and a Saturday Morning until Lunchtime.

In our experience the most succesfull equipping systems have always been when Churches adapt a model for their local context. We suggest that you obtain a good equipping system like the one at Little Falls and then adapt if for your context. You can obtain the whole system from Cell Church International. Remember however, that no equipping process is complete without the hands on mentoring that is obtained by being active in a vibrant Cell. This system is based on this foundation. There are other systems that are more detailed and longer to complete, but we found that our need was to train leaders in a hurry. Our culture is predominantly Churched or aware people. In a total unreached group you might want to take longer to train up this level of leaders.
After the leader has completed the Equipping process and has proved himself in a local cell, he becomes eligible for a new Cell leader. As soon as he becomes a Cell Leader we give him a DNA OF THE HOME CELL practical guide. This file contains to do lists for every aspect of Cell Life. It was written with the idea of been extremely practical. If the Cell leader needs any refreshing on any aspect of Cell life they then consult their DNA manual. The underlying theme being that just like the DNA contains the genetic code of a Cell, so this manual will contain the essentials for operating a successful Home Cell in practical do it yourself tips.
LEVEL 2 - Zone Supervisor training.
We operate an Encounter 5 which deals with the following topics:
| Introduction | | Spiritual Qualifications of a Zone Supervisor | The Place of a Zone Supervisor in the Church - The Difference between the Zone Supervisor and District Pastor's functions.
- The Roles of a Zone Supervisor.
- Questions to ask Cell Leaders when the Z.S. contacts them.
| Problem Solving Guidelines to solve problems using the "I SEE" Principle | | What is a Healthy Cell? | Strategy for Zone Supervisors - Goals
- Regular Cell visits
- What does a Z.S. want to achieve at a Cell
- Before the Cell Meeting
- During the Cell Meeting
- After the Cell Meeting
| | Checklist for Evaluating the Cell Meeting | How to Provide Feedback - Why feedback?
- Five rules for Providing feedback
- How to give Feedback
- How to give feedback for positive behaviour
- How to give feedback for negative behaviour
| | Your Monthly Meeting with Cell Leaders | Different Cell Group Multiplication Processes - Multiplication of a Cell with an intern
- Planting a Cell
- A Cell needs to multiply but does not need an Intern
- What happens if a Cell stagnates?
| How to Handle Conflict - Disagreeing
- Placating
- Convincing
- Agreeing to Disagree
- Asserting yourself
- Withdrawing respectfully
| | Zone Supervisor Skills | Success as a Zone Supervisor - Cell Growth Automatisms
- The Zone Supervisor Report
- The Zone Supervisor Job Description
- Removing the Obstacles to Cell Growth
| Since Zone Supervisors have proved themselves by being successful Cell Leaders, there training is easy. The bulk of their training is done practically by accompanying a Pastor as he visits and mentors other leaders. The Zone Supervisor models what this Pastor does.
Level 3 and up
All training for Pastors include a formal studying at and educational institution like a Bible College or Seminary or University. Mentoring takes place by the Senior Pastor. For more information visit our website at www.littlefalls.co.za
If you follow the basic guidelines and topics detailed in this abovementioned answer you will develop a reliable equipping process for new leaders.
